March, Mardi Gras, and Mysteries
March is quite a month for mysteries! We are leaving winter and peeking into spring. Possibilities! Just like a good cozy mystery—hints and suggestions. Here at Cozy Cat Press we have a goodly number of mysteries that fit right in with this sentiment.
Author Paula Darnell brings us a lovely, inspiring and fun cozy that truly fits the promise of March. Her DIY Diva series follows designer Lauren McMillan in some rather artistic adventures. In DEATH BY DESIGN:
DIY Diva Laurel McMillan rejoices when her student Jennifer's peacock pillow wins a design contest; that is, until Jennifer's husband Matt is smothered with the very same pillow. When the police confiscate her prize-winning pillow, Jennifer freaks out, and Laurel fears that Jennifer may be more upset about losing the pillow than about Matt's death. But the police arrest disgraced nurse Edna Elkins, not Jennifer. Begging Laurel to find the real killer, Edna insists she's innocent, but Laurel's not so sure, and when Laurel encounters Jennifer while walking her lovable Labrador retriever, Bear, she's left with more questions than answers. Should the crafty DIY Diva play DIY Detective or does Edna really belong in jail?

Another author at Cozy Cat Press who fits in with the feelings of March is Owen Magruder. His mysteries are set in beautiful Scotland and feature a clever detective and his wife.
“John Braemhor, a private investigator who has served as a member of the Rhodesian constabulary and later as a civil servant in South Africa, is attempting to settle into retirement running a B&B in Daraichburn in the Scottish lowlands. However, his keen sense of justice and his inordinately skilled deductive powers continually draw him back into investigative criminology as unusual situations cross his path. Along with his wife, Mary, John finds himself again tracking down elusive criminals, when his help is requested. One such request occurs when a young American couple, the MacIains, appear at John and Mary’s B&B, searching for the husband’s ancestors. The twosome’s search leads them to Glencoe and the home of the head of the Campbell clan, where the ancient MacDonald-Campbell feud began three centuries ago. When Sir Robert Campbell is found dead––his throat slit, young Robert MacIain becomes a prime suspect. Can John and Mary help these young people solve the strange modern day mystery stemming from this centuries old feud? Or will the feud at Glencoe elude even the superior talents of John and Mary Braemhor?”
Here is a wonderful mystery to enjoy in the early Spring month of March.
Another lovely spring-like cozy mystery we have here at Cozy Cat Press is Rita Seedorf and Margaret Verhoef’s LETTERS FROM BRACKHAM WOOD.
“In 1937 England, twenty years after losing contact with her only living relatives, Moira Edwards sends a Letter from Brackham Wood, where she has been serving as a maid of all work, to the last known American address of her uncle and aunt and their daughter––thus putting in motion a series of letters spanning all of World War II. In these letters, Moira and her cousin, Margaret Walker, a doctor living in Spokane, Washington, reflect on their lives, the world’s condition, changing times for women, and a case of espionage in which she, Moira, finds herself at the center.
This book is uplifting and has one of the most spring-like covers we have ever published.
Probably the author who best fits today’s category of March and Mardi Gras, is our own Mary Koppel who lives and writes in New Orleans. Her funny mystery HOT DOG DOWN tells a rollicking tale of a New Orleans amateur sleuth and her foray into the world of movie extras.
“Denise Reed is a good person. She volunteers at her church and a retirement home. Through no fault of her own, she now finds herself unemployed and trying to make ends meet by playing a giant hotdog in a Hollywood movie being filmed in the streets of New Orleans. One day, while chatting with one of the other extras, she is suddenly knocked to the ground where she struggles uselessly to get up while the mugger proceeds to violently attack her friend. Feeling guilty when her friend is hospitalized from the beating, Denise uses her time on the set to see if she can ferret out the mugger––all while trying to find less embarrassing employment, juggle two suitors, and care for her daughter. No, sirree! Nothing will keep this hotdog down!”
We hope our description of these authors and their mysteries will inspire you to do some pleasure reading during the month of March. And if none of these suggestions piques your interest, remember we have over fifty authors and almost 300 cozy mysteries listed here on our website. We are certain that at least one of them will suit your needs.
