Ten Spooky Writing Prompts

As October is full of the creepy, eerie, and haunted, here are ten spooky writing prompts to get your creativity flowing.

  1. Write a piece from the point of view of a Halloween character (ghost, vampire, zombie, witch, skeleton, etc.).

  2. Start your piece with a chilling, spine-tingling scene.

  3. Write a piece focused on you spending time with a horror writer or poet. The person can be dead or alive.

  4. Write a letter to the monster that scares you the most. What will you say to them?

  5. Write a piece that includes a Halloween animal (bat, spider, raven, crow, etc.).

  6. Write a piece about an encounter you had with the paranormal.

  7. Write a piece that includes one, two, or three Halloween items (pumpkin, scarecrow, witch’s hat, cauldron, witch’s broom, spellbook, etc.).

  8. Write a piece set in a haunted asylum.

  9. Write a piece about your encounter with a witch.

  10. Listen to haunting, eerie classical music and write a piece that could incorporate it as background music.

Happy writing and I hope you enjoy Halloween!
